Updates

How a new version reaches you, what the card looks like, and why 1.3.14 and earlier never got one.

Pragma checks for updates fifteen seconds after launch and then once an hour, against its own feed at https://www.trypragma.xyz/api/updates. If you have a licence key stored it is sent along, but while Pragma is free the feed serves every copy, with or without one.

Nothing downloads or installs without you pressing a button.

What you will see

A small card appears in the bottom-left corner:

Pragma 1.3.16 is available
A newer version is ready to download.
[ Download ] [ Later ]

Press Download and the same card becomes a progress bar. While it is working it cannot be dismissed. When the file has landed:

1.3.16 is ready
Restart to finish updating.
[ Restart to update ] [ Later ]

Press that and Pragma restarts on the new version. Later hides the card until the next version, or until this one finishes downloading.

Automatic checks that fail stay silent. There is no point interrupting you because a hotel network dropped a request. Only a check you started yourself reports an error, with a Try again button.

The versions that cannot update themselves

The flag was set to false when Pragma was still a fork whose inherited feed pointed at a different project, so every check offered a "newer" build that would have replaced Pragma with somebody else's app. Turning it off was right at the time. Leaving it off was not, and release notes claiming that existing installs updated themselves were wrong every time they were written.

If you are on 1.3.14 or earlier, download the current version once from trypragma.xyz and install it over your existing copy. Settings and history stay where they are. That is the last manual download.

On a Mac, every version updates itself, from 1.3.57, the first Mac release. It needs Pragma in Applications: a copy opened straight from the .dmg cannot replace itself.
